Class Description
During a training session in Amherst in 1980, Moshe Feldenkrais put a question to the students in his course, he asked them, what is the definition of health?
This short course presents students with a series of Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons within The Feldenkrais Method®. This repertoire of kinesthetic study will provide students a way to engage with their immediate and direct internal sensory experience, a way of directing one’s attention to foster growth and healing through somatic understanding of the body’s intelligence.
In describing his notion of health, Feldenkrais said, “it's the kind of organization of the mind or the brain, the entire self of the person, that can take a shock. The shock that it can take without losing (his) ability to recover is a measure of (his) health”. In current parlance we speak about resilience, but how do we become healthier? What action can we take towards healing? The Feldenkrais Method™ works on reorienting one’s nervous system towards new patterns of thinking, feeling, and moving to bring a greater pallet of choices, a neurological variability to one’s system.
This method often employs small and slow movements, and many of the lessons happen in some configuration on the floor. No movement or dance training required.
