Grisha Coleman is a certified Awareness Through Movement/ The Feldenkrais Method™ practitioner studying with David Zemach-Bersin, Denis Leri, Carole Kress and Elizabeth Berringer among many others. She has also trained in Body-Mind Centering ™ and the Alexander Technique™ with Mark Taylor and Niamh Dowling, respectively.

Coleman is also a time-based artist working in areas of choreography and performance, experiential technology, and sound composition. Her practice and research explore relationships across physiological, technological, and ecological systems; human movement, our machines, and the places we inhabit.

Her art and scholarly work echo::system is a springboard for re-imagining the environment, environmental change, and environmental justice through assembled dance, sound/visual media, and computation. She was invited as a Radcliffe Fellow (2021/22) for her current project, The Movement Undercommons: Technology as Resistance | Future Archives that looks to build a lexicon of vernacular movement data centered around identity and embodied cultural narrative.

Coleman earned her MFA in music composition and integrated media from California Institute of the Arts. Before the academy, she worked full time as a dancer/choreographer with the acclaimed dance company Urban Bush Women, and later created the music performance group Hot Mouth, which toured internationally and was nominated for the NYC Drama Desk Award for ‘Most Unique Theatrical Experience.’

She holds the position of Professor of Movement, Computation, and Digital Media in the in the College of Arts and Design and Theater at Northeastern University, and continues affiliations with the School of Arts, Media, and Engineering, the School for the Future of Innovation in Society, and the Center for Race and Democracy at Arizona State University.
