Revisiting Curators, Conservators and the Ceramic Object (Spring 2021)

The Harvard Ceramics Program has long collaborated with museums at Harvard in support of scholarly research of ceramic objects. This course offers participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of historic ceramic objects from across the globe via six lectures that you can review at your own pace. Each lecture features teams of conservators, curators, conservation scientists and/or scholars from museums at Harvard and beyond discussing their research of ceramic objects within the collection. With your registration, you will receive access to a Harvard Google Classroom with all six recordings for the duration of the semester plus 30 additional days.

  • Bernini’s terra cotta sculptures with Tony Sigel, Senior Conservator of Objects and Sculpture
  • The making and conservation of an Italic bucchero amphora of the 6th century BCE, with Haddon Dine, Objects Conservation Fellow, and Susanne Ebbinghaus, George M.A. Hanfmann Curator of Ancient Art and Head, Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art
  • Materials, processes and people involved in the manufacture of European porcelain during the 18th and 19th centuries with Gabriella Szalay, Renke B. and Pamela M. Thye Curatorial Fellow in the Busch-Reisinger Museum and special guest Arlene Schechet!
  • 12th C Islamic Sweetmeats Dish with curators and conservators from the Harvard Art Museums with Tony Sigel, Senior Conservator of Objects and Sculpture, and Katherine Eremin, Patricia Cornwell Senior Conservation Scientist.
  • Greek Terra Cotta Figurines with Frances Gallart Marques, Frederick Randolph Grace Curatorial Fellow in Ancient Art and Susan Costello, Associate Conservator of Objects and Sculpture at the Harvard Art Museum.

This course does not include access to glazing or firing services at the Harvard Ceramics Program studio.

Course Fees: Free for Harvard College Undergraduate Students; $150 for Harvard Graduate Students and Adult Community
