Location

OFA Harvard Ceramics Program

Registration for this workshop is limited to those who are enrolled in a Spring 2025 course at the Ceramics Program, Office to the Arts at Harvard.

Walking into our glaze room for the first time can be intimidating, with choices in different firing temperatures, surface finishes, and application methods. This workshop will complement your current class but will provide a deeper dive into navigating our glaze room and taking the mystery out of glazing. Discussions will include glazing our many clay types and their corresponding temperatures. We will see examples of fired work, both successes and failures. A tour of the kilns will further our understanding of our loading and firing methods.

Demonstrations will start with set-up, bisque preparation, and cleanup. Application methods (dip, pour, and spray) and an overview of essential decorative elements will be demonstrated. Glazing more challenging forms, such as oversized, flat, and textured will be covered, and cleaning off lids and feet.

Students are welcome to bring bisque for discussion, and small bisque samples will be available for practice.

Workshop Fee: $50.00 for those enrolled in the Spring 2025 term; FREE for Harvard Undergraduates. Registration will open on Wednesday, February 12 at 2:00pm. A link to register for this workshop will be sent by email to those enrolled in a Spring 2025 Ceramics Program course.
