Bookmaking Basics (Spring 2021)

Session 1: February 4 – March 11

Course Description: Books are one of the most intimate objects you can engage with. Design, stitch, and bind your own books use for sketching, journaling, or telling a narrative. We will look at a variety of different bookmaking techniques from the simple ‘zine to accordion books to “pop-up” books! No experience required.

With your registration, you will receive access to a Harvard Google Classroom which will provide a place for sharing of ideas, discussion, hand-outs and will feature recordings of each class. In case you miss a class or would like to review, these recordings will be available for 30 days after the end of the course.

Suggested Materials List:

  • Various paper of students’ choice. (Can use anything from simple computer paper to finer papers like Rives BFK)
  • Awl (pin tool works as well)
  • Various decorative papers for binding
  • PVA glue
  • Waxed thread
  • Quilting needle
  • X-acto knife or other cutting tool
  • Cutting mat (cardboard is fine too)
  • Chip board
  • Stapler

Clay and Material Purchases

This course fee covers instruction only. Participants are responsible for obtaining their own clay. Find a list of available clays, tools and materials. Instructions on how to purchase clay and materials will be made available prior to February 1st. If you have questions, please email Ji-Eun Kim

Glazing and Firing Services

Registered students are welcome to drop off, fire and glaze your ceramic work through the Harvard Ceramics program. We charge 3 cents per cubic inch for all firings (bisque and glaze). We offer electric kiln (Cone 06 for bisque, 6 for glaze), high fire reduction and soda vapor firings (Cone 10). Specialty firing temperatures can be arranged. At the end of each session, you will be invoiced for the cost of your firings.

Course Fees: Free for Harvard College Undergraduate Students; $300 for Harvard Graduate Students, Harvard employees and Adult Community.
