Bio: Located in Harvard Square, the Boston Cello Academy studio is led by Dr. Cherry Kim, who has taught cello for over 20 years. Her teaching combines the ergonomic, fundamental aspects of cello playing and the discovery of musical designs to help students achieve freedom and full expression in their playing. Previously, Dr. Kim taught for the New England Conservatory Preparatory Orchestras, Lexington Chamber Music Center, Camp Encore/Coda, ArtsAhimsa Music Festival, Winchester Community Music School, Brookline public schools, and non-major lessons at Rice University and Boston University. Recognized for her "poignant lyricism, scope and bigness of her sound and expressive gestures," Dr. Kim has performed in the U.S. and internationally as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. She has performed in prestigious venues including the Boston Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, Tanglewood Festival, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Norton Museum of Art, and Shanghai Conservatory. And she served as principal cellist with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony by the Sea, and Boston Cecilia among others. Currently, Dr. Kim is the artistic director of the CK Ensemble and cellist of the Arcada String Quartet. She performs regularly with many orchestras in the New England region including the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and Symphony New Hampshire. Dr. Kim holds degrees from the New England Conservatory, Boston University, Rice University, Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, and Longy School of Music of Bard College. She plays both baroque and modern cello.
