Alex Kim
Alexandra Kim is an emerging ceramic artist originally from Newton, MA. She began working with clay when she was eight years old, becoming increasingly dedicated to ceramics throughout high school and into college. She works with all types of clay — porcelain, white stoneware, brown stoneware, and sculptural clay bodies — and utilizes a variety of techniques: wheel-throwing, hand-building, and extruded forms. Her work often plays with positive and negative space, using incision to cut and indent forms or carving to subtract clay. Alexandra is deeply inspired by forms in nature, and for a period of time her work drew heavily from the organic grooves and shapes found in the coral reef. Ancient Korean pottery serves as another big source of inspiration for Alexandra; she spent much time researching Sanggam, a technique of inlaying slip to create an interesting surface, as well as Onggi jars, Korean fermentation jars used for pickling kimchi. From those vessels, she created her own, modernized versions. Alexandra oscillates between creating functional dish ware and striving to expand her pieces past the ordinary vessel - challenging clay to be purely aesthetic or sculptural rather than purely functional.
