Course Description: Review the presentations and demonstrations for this Spring 2021 semester of Inspired by History. Each of the five recordings features a piece from the Harvard Art Museums that is the subject for that week. Guest curators from the Harvard Art Museums visit each class and speak to the importance of the piece while Instructor Denny McLaughlin demonstrates his interpretation of how the work was made.
The work examined in this dynamic mix of hands-on making and art historical interpretation include an ancient Japanese Jomon vessel, an Askos vessel from 2100-1500 BCE Cyprus, a 15th C Korean Punchong Jar, a sprigged, salt-glazed pitcher from 15th C Cologne, Germany, the iconic “Moon Jar” as well as a stoneware vessel by David Drake (US).

With your registration, you will receive access to a Harvard Google Classroom which will provide all the lecture recordings and acts as a place for sharing of ideas, discussion, hand-outs and will feature all class recordings and resource material for your review.
This lecture course does not come with access to glazing or firing services at the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard and is considered a lecture course.
