In this one-day workshop, students will discover new ways to liven up ceramic forms with dimensional carved surfaces. Artist and educator Katie Bosley Sabin will introduce various methods for carving leather hard clay, including the step-by-step process used to create her own sculptural porcelain vessels. The session will include an introduction to a variety of carving tools and cover techniques for keeping work leather hard over an extended period of time.

Demonstrations will cover ways to carve unique textures, illustrative line-work, and dimensional pattern-work. This workshop will also review compositional considerations for decorating three-dimensional forms and methods for laying out designs on forms with success. Students will learn through discussion, demonstrations, and instructor-guided work time.

This workshop is open to students of all skill levels who are enrolled in a Fall 2024 course at the Ceramics Program. Cost: $175 for those enrolled in the Fall 2024 term; FREE for Harvard College Undergraduates.. Registered participants in Fall 2024 courses will receive an email link to register for this workshop on Wednesday, August 21 at 10:00am.

Materials/what to bring:

  • some mid-process clay work at the leather hard stage: a few tiles and a form of your choice to carve
  • Notebook
  • Apron
  • basic pottery tools (rib, needle tool, fettling knife, or other small tools you like to use); the instructor will provide additional carving tools to share during the workshop
