Richard Burkett is an Emeritus Professor of Art at San Diego State University, teaching there 30 years. His work has largely focused on soda fired vessel forms, both functional and sculptural. He received the M.F.A. degree in both ceramics and photography from Indiana University in 1986. From 1973 to 1983 he ran the Wild Rose Pottery in Indiana.
Richard Burkett has traveled extensively in Ecuador over the last 25 years with Joe Molinaro of Eastern Kentucky University, documenting indigenous pottery cultures in the Amazon basin. He is the co-author of Mythical Figures & Mucawas: Ceramics from the Ecuadorian Amazon, Ceramics: A Potter’s Handbook, and Porcelain Masters: major works by leading artists. He created HyperGlaze, educational glaze calculation software for artists. Burkett has lectured on ceramics in Korea, Ecuador, Sweden, Turkey, and Finland. In his spare time he plays bluegrass music.
