The Submission follows the story of Danny, a young gay playwright, whose new play about a black mother and her son trying to get out of the projects has just been accepted into the nation’s preeminent theater festival. Scared of backlash due to his inexperience with his writing material, he hires Emilie, a black actress, to pretend to be the writer. As they work to put on Danny’s show, the lies pile up, shaky alliances are forged, and the darker sides of both Emilie and Danny are brought out. The Submission explores the crucial contemporary issue of support (or lack thereof) between marginalized groups.
This show is sponsored by QSA and is in partnership with BLACKCAST. It features strong, offensive language. The show will have talkbacks after performances, where the themes and topics of The Submission are discussed with actors, academics, and of course, the audience.
