Alexis, son and heir of Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre, is betrothed to the only maiden of suitable rank in the town, Aline, the daughter of Lady Sangazure, but disagrees with his father’s notions that marriage should follow rank alone, without regard for love. To test this theory he hires a sorcerer, Wells, who brews a love potion causing all who drink from it to fall madly in love with the first person they see. Hilarious chaos ensues as Sir Marmaduke, Lady Sangazure, Aline herself, and the rest of the town fall victim to the potion’s influence, but Alexis and Wells soon realize that they must right this wrong – no matter the cost. Gilbert and Sullivan satirize the social strata of Victorian England in this reimagining of their first operetta!
