What do a medieval stained-glass window, Moholy-Nagy’s kinetic Light-Space Modulator, and Monet’s Charing Cross Bridge have in common? They all use light as a material, a subject, or sometimes both. What challenges does light pose for artists? How do museum professionals think about it and use it?
Francesca Bewer, research curator for conservation and technical studies, along with guest experts, will lead this exploration of light in art. The workshop will combine close looking at select objects in the collections with hands-on experimentation in the museums’ Materials Lab, a space designed to encourage the investigation of materials and techniques used in works of art.
