The only other mass setting by Beethoven besides the Missa solemnis, the Mass in C was composed for the Esterházy court at Eisenstadt, where Joseph Haydn, Beethoven’s teacher, served as court composer for many years. We will also perform three rarely heard works by Haydn: the festive choral hymns Ens aeternum and O Jesu, te invocamus and a gorgeous Salve regina in E major for soprano, chorus, and strings.
