Over the last few years, Harvard has grappled with the historical legacy of the names and symbols that describe its campus and define its image. Increase Mather, a Puritan minister, Harvard’s 7th president, and the namesake of Mather House, has often been mentioned as one of the more controversial figures. Mather students and affiliates have spent some months investigating Increase’s life and legacy, contextualizing and seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the alleged book-burner and slave owner that most students know. This is a first attempt to pass that knowledge to the Mather community.
