Sam GibshAlternative Firing Workshop
Four sessions in July: Thursdays & Fridays July 11, 12, 18, & 19, 1-4pm each day

This four-session workshop with Shamai Sam Gibsh will focus on terra sigillata, translating literally to “sealed earth” and alternative processes of firing work. Terra sigillata, used in much of Gibsh’s work represents a connection between ideas and ancient techniques of East Asia and the Middle East. Students will learn how make terra sigillata and how to achieve the desired “specific gravity” with a hydrometer made during the workshop. After the terra sigillata is applied to bone dry work prepared by students ahead of time. Then the real fun begins! The work will then be bisque fired and decorated with a unique variety of materials including milk, egg and other organics in both the electric and reduction kilns. To view become inspired by some of Gibsh’s surfaces, visit his website here.
