Course Description: From our sketchbook to the wall, this class will focus on pattern design and the tools needed to make tile molds at home with an emphasis towards the home. Projects will include backsplashes, accent walls and garden pavers. Each week there will be a demonstration of making a tile with molds constructed with foam and simple tools. For those students with access to clay, demonstrations of tile production with clay will assist the student in creating tiles at home. Students who do not have access to clay will benefit from observing the demonstrations and will have the tools to produce tiles once back in the studio.
With your registration, you will receive access to a Harvard Google Classroom which will provide a place for discussion, sharing of ideas and will feature recordings of each class. In case you miss a class or would like to review, these recordings will be available for 30 days after the end of the course.

- Sketchbook or notebook
- Adhesive Foam Sheets – 12 sheet pack, 9” x 12”
- Thick Foam Sheet for Base – 5 sheets, 9”x12”
- X-Acto Knife and blades
- Tracing Paper
- Washable Markers
- Styrofoam food trays (home or grocery)
- Cardboard (home)
- Clay
Optional Materials:
- Silicone Rubber Compound (optional – to make silicone mold to cast plater, wax, soap, resin)
Clay and Material Purchases
This course fee covers instruction only. Participants are responsible for obtaining their own clay. Here is the list of available clays, tools and materials at the Ceramics Program. Glazing and Firing Services
Registered students are welcome to drop off, fire and glaze your ceramic work through the Harvard Ceramics program. We charge 3 cents per cubic inch for all firings (bisque and glaze). We offer electric kiln (Cone 06 for bisque, 6 for glaze), high fire reduction and soda vapor firings (Cone 10). Specialty firing temperatures can be arranged. At the end of each session, you will be invoiced for the cost of your firings.
Course Fees: Free for Harvard College Undergraduate Students; $300 for Harvard Graduate Students, Harvard employees and Adult Community.
