Class Description

This is an all-levels class that will explore basic elements of freestyle (improvised) Hip Hop dance. This class does not teach pre-choreographed phrases. Each week's lesson will explore a skill used in Hip Hop dance that will be combined with other skills learned throughout the class series. Consistent attendance is highly encouraged in order to keep up with the curriculum. Note-taking during class is also highly encouraged! No previous dance experience is necessary.

Hip Hop is a culture that was formed by Black and Brown communities in The Bronx, NY, during the 70s. It is composed of four pillars: DJing, Breaking, Graffiti, and MCing. During the 80s, a new dance style emerged from the NYC house party scene called "social dance," which today is known more commonly as Hip Hop dance.

A note about drop-ins:

Due to the nature of this class's structure, drop-ins will be permitted for the first three weeks of Hip Hop for those interested in trying the class out. Starting the week of February 12, the class focus will shift to those committed to the full series so that students may progress in a collectively supportive environment.
