Many regions of ancient Asia Minor were what we would now think of as “wine country.” In Greek and Roman times, several cities prospered from viticulture, as evidenced by their coins depicting grapes, amphorae, and the wine god Dionysos himself. More than 50 cities in Asia Minor claimed to be his birthplace, and would organize wine festivals and Carnivalesque parades to honor him. Johannes Nollé, professor of ancient history and epigraphy at Ludwig-Maximilians University, in Munich, will present some of the best examples of coins from the region and convey some of the joie de vivre so characteristic of life in classical antiquity.... Christian Thompson, who is among the artists featured in the special exhibition Everywhen: The Eternal Present in Indigenous Art from Australia, will discuss his paper “Creative Responses to Australian Material Culture in the Pitt Rivers Museum Collection: Parallels between Christian Thompson—We Bury Our Own and Fred Wilson—Mining The Museum.” He will also perform songs in Bidjara, an Indigenous Australian dialect.... Dancers from Armitage Gone! Dance Company and Harvard University students will perform a short dance inspired by the exhibition Everywhen: The Eternal Present in Indigenous Art from Australia. The dance will be performed to Didjerilayover, a composition by Stuart Dempster featuring the evocative harmonics of the traditional Aboriginal instrument the Didjeridu, which Dempster introduced to the United States. The event will take place in the Calderwood Courtyard at the Harvard Art Museums.

We are looking for students throughout the University who are interested in participating in this collaboration to promote the arts on campus. In the course of ethnographic fieldwork in central Australia in the 1990s, Michael D. Jackson, Distinguished Visiting Professor of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School, got to know Paddy Nelson Jupurrula, one of the pre-eminent Warlpiri artists of the Western Desert painting movement. Professor Jackson will share some of Jupurrula’s insights into a worldview that emphasizes metamorphic processes, phases, or passages rather than contrasting conditions, such as being and nothingness, life and death, presence and absence, subject and object. In describing and depicting the transformations through which all things pass, Warlpiri artists invoke gestation and birth, sexual intercourse, digestion and defecation, sleeping and waking, fullness and emptiness as basic ontological metaphors.... In this Radcliffe Institute exhibition, filmmaker Philippe Grandrieux presents three video installations from his series Unrest. White Epilepsy and Meurtrière are shown as a diptych, alongside a new single-channel video and a new triptych. Grandrieux strives for inventive, truly radical cinema. His first three full-feature films—Sombre (1999), La vie nouvelle (2002), and Un lac (2008)—demonstrate his exploration of image, sound, and narrative structures....
