    Join us for a virtual field trip to an artist's studio! We will visit contemporary ceramic artists for a guided tour of their space, a demo of their process, and discussion about their work and how it has progressed throughout their career. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion.

    You are going to flip your lid during this very special 2-hour event with Denny McLaughlin at the Harvard Ceramics Program in Allston, MA. Denny, being one of the few staff who have access to our facility due to COVID, will be working in our studio live! This session will focus on throwing lidded forms - jars, casseroles, etc.. Denny will address the challenges of creating lids, finials and pairing handles to the lidded form.

    We are thrilled to travel to Chicago to visit multi-media artist, author and educator Paul Andrew Wandless. Our discussion will be around materiality and the thought process Paul goes through to choose what types of materials serve his concepts best. Clay, printmaking, stone carving, mold making, leatherworking, metalsmithing, wood carving and painting are all mediums used in combination or individually for creation of his works. How do you organize a studio to work with a multiple materials, all with different characteristics and needs for space and safety? Well, we shall find out!

    We had a wonderful visit with Suze Lindsay in Session 1 and many of you reached out for a second visit to focus on surface! Once again, we travel to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina to visit the one and only Suze Lindsay for a special two-hour edition of our series! Suze (scheduled to be a Demonstrating Artist at this year's National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts this past March) and her husband Kent McLaughlin work out of their studio Fork Mountain pottery, featuring the salt kiln that Suze uses for the beautiful surfaces of her work. Suze will welcome us to her studio for demonstration, discussion of her surface work and her career as a studio potter and educator.

We will visit contemporary ceramic artists for a guided tour of their space, a demo of their process, and discussion about their work and how it has progressed throughout their career. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion.

    This week we will be in our very own backyard with a visit to the home studio of Boston-area, ceramic artist Joanna Mark. Joanna is both a studio participant at the Harvard Ceramics Program as well an instructor of handbuilding themed classes. Joanna will demonstrate her process of creating boxes and planters with slabs and then applying her unique, textured surfaces to them.

    Event: Friday, July 10th, 2020 from 2pm - 3pm

    REGISTRATION CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT

    Cost: Free for Harvard Undergraduates. $25.00 for Harvard Graduate Students, Harvard Staff and Adult Community.
