Visit an Artist - En Iwamura

    10:00am to 11:00am

    En Iwamura

We are off to Japan to visit with the incredibly prolific sculptor En Iwamura!

About the Visit an Artist Series: Join us for a virtual field trip to an artist's studio! We will visit contemporary ceramic artists for a guided tour of their space, a demo of their process, and discussion about their work and how it has progressed throughout their career. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion.

En Iwamura's current research investigates how he can influence and alter the experience of viewers who occupy space with his installation artworks. When Iwamura describes the space and scale in his works, he references the Japanese philosophy of Ma. Ma implies meanings of distance, moment, space, relationship, and more. People constantly read and measure different Ma between themselves, and finding the proper or comfortable Ma between people or places can provide a specific relationship at a given moment. Through his work, Iwamura intend to create such an encounter with site-responsive installations, and provide through entering the space, an opportunity for viewers to recognize Ma themselves.

Visit an Artist - Brad Schwieger

    4:00pm to 5:00pm

    Brad Schwieger

We're off to Ohio to visit the studio of master potter and sculptor Brad Schwieger. During this one-hour studio visit, Brad will discuss his artistic journey and the parallels he finds between architecture and pottery. "Like architecture, pottery deals with elements of form and structure, interior/exterior, utility or containment, surface detail and adornment. I have attempted to synthesize these interests and produce work that shares the minimal and complex, the miniature and monumental, the formal elements of design, the implied and the possibility of actual function." - Brad Schwieger
