    Donté K. Hayes - The Artist's Studio

    Donte Hayes

    The sculptural ceramic work of Donté K. Hayes pulls from his interest in hip-hop culture, history, and science fiction to explore themes in Afrofuturism, a projected vision of an imagined future which critiques the historical and cultural events of the African Diaspora and the distinct black experience of the Middle Passage. He combines ceramics with printmaking, installation, and performance to elevate his ceramic sculptures as a historical and creative base materials to inform memories of the past. Donté will present his work through images and/or a brief demo and host Fabio J. Fernández will guide the discussion through a range of topics including access, mentorship, and community

    Salvador Jiménez Flores

    We welcome Salvador Jiménez-Flores back to Harvard Ceramics to speak about his work and current projects. In his interdisciplinary work, Salvador explores the themes of colonization, migration, "the other," stereotypes and futurism. Salvador is currently an artist and assistant professor in Ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Prior to that, he was an Artist in Residence at the Harvard Ceramics Program from 2015-17. Salvador will present his work through images and/or a brief demo and host Fabio J. Fernández will guide the discussion through a range of topics including access, mentorship, and community.

    Sanam Emami

    Potter Sanam Emami was born in Iran and grew up in England. She now lives in Colorado, where she is an associate professor of art at Colorado State University. She came to pottery after studying American history, which led her to think about her own history, and her work combines influences of Persian and Islamic art with a contemporary sensibility. For Sanam, making pots, and understanding her voice within that work, is a continuing journey. Fabio Fernández will lead us in a conversation with Sanam from her Colorado studio as part of  The Artist’s Studio series.

    Shawanda Corbett

    Shawanda Corbett’s studio practice background is in the ceramic vessel. The craft principles, fundamentals and discipline in ceramics are applied to other mediums, such as dance theatre production including live performance and film performance. Currently, she is researching how AI can facilitate craft theory in her studio practice. Corbett was recently awarded the 2020 Turner bursary award by Tate Britain. We will join Corbett in the United Kingdom as she shares her powerful work through images and discussion of her process. Host Fabio J.     Roberto Lugo uses porcelain as his medium of choice, illuminating its aristocratic surface with imagery of poverty, inequality, and social and racial injustice. Lugo will be in conversation with Fabio J. Fernández as part of our The Artist’s Studio series regarding the trajectory of his artistic voice and practice in clay from his inspirational Emerging Artist lecture in 2015 at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference to his recent receipt of the Rome Prize as well as a Pew Fellowship in 2019.

    Once again, we have the pleasure of traveling to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina to visit the one and only Suze Lindsay for a special two-hour edition of our series! During this visit, Suze will be focused her methods of decorating with slips to define and compliment the form. Though Suze fires in salt, these same techniques and slip recipes can be used in a variety of firing temperatures and atmospheres. All the recipes discussed during Suze's demonstration will be provided to each registered student.

    We are honored to have the opportunity to visit one of the most important voices in the the field of ceramics, mixed media sculpture, painting and drawing - Arthur Gonzalez! We will visit with Arthur in his California studio to discuss how he has crafted a career not defined by any one process or material but instead with his own unique brand of storytelling. From the artist's website: "Dark, somber and foreboding, Arthur Gonzalez's works encourage serious deliberation and reflection on the relationship between personal concerns and world issues. Raw in form, lacking in smoothness and rough in finish, the ceramic sculptures give glimpses of a conversation or a contemplation in progress. Gonzalez's creations of ceramic and found objects reveal visions and feelings that are not polished but ongoing processes of gyrating thoughts and churning emotions that threaten to erupt into reality and consciousness to defy the fantasy of a peaceful experience."

    Visit an Artist - Clive Sithole

    Clive SitholeThis week, we'll stay close to home and visit our neighbors at Mudflat Studios in Somerville, MA to work with the amazing Clive Sithole! Clive was born in Soweto, South Africa and has traveled around South Africa to study and work with local potters, including Zulu and Venda ceramic artists. He has led workshops internationally, traveling to Nigeria to study the Udu ceramic drum, and to the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, England, to work with Magdalene Odundo. In 2018, Clive presented a workshop with Zulu potters Jabu Nala and Thembe Nala, demonstrating their traditional and contemporary coil building techniques and surface treatments. In 2019, Clive came to the US to be Mudflat's 2019-2020 Artist in Residence.
