    Reimagining Musical Instruments: The Sound of Impossible Objects in My Music

    During his time at the Radcliffe Institute, Camilo Mendez is composing two new chamber works using prepared musical instruments. One will be part of the compositional cycle “BURSZTYN,” and the other will be part of “Cartography of Convoluted Spaces.” The works will be performed by Yarn/Wire. This concert is an excellent opportunity to hear an innovative composer’s newest work.

    Guitarist David Gilmore has performed and recorded with many of today’s most influential artists including Wayne Shorter, Steve Coleman, Christian McBride, Cassandra Wilson, Dave Douglas, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Randy Brecker, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke, Sam Rivers and many others. His latest release, Transitions (2017 Criss Cross Records) was one of Downbeat Magazine’s top CDs of 2017. He was also voted into the both the Critic’s Poll and Reader’s Poll of 2017.

    Gilmore’s playing has been compared to guitarists as diverse as George Benson and Jimi Hendrix. Gilmore has been the recipient of numerous grants, including two Chamber Music of America, New Jazz Works Composer Grants, and nominated for the prestigious Doris Duke Artist Award. Committed to an improvisational approach that reflects a global awareness, he conducts master classes around the world, and is a professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston....     Legendary pianist and professor of music André Watts is the recipient of the 2018 Luise Vosgerchian Teaching Award, Harvard’s highest music award recognizing an outstanding educator. Watts will receive the award during a free concert and ceremony 5:30 p.m. April 27 at Sanders Theatre, where he will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major (Emperor Concerto) with the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra under the director of Federico Cortese, senior lecturer on music at Harvard University....     Du Bois Orchestra at Harvard Concert

    Harvard Wind Ensemble and Sunday Jazz Band present "Weclome to Harvard"

    The Harvard Sunday Jazz Band and Harvard Wind Ensemble will present a special Visitas concert to welcome the class of 2022.

    The Sunday Jazz Band perform  Mongo Santamaria’s “Afro Blue,” Mario Bauza's “Zambia” and Kenny Dorham’s “Una Ma.” The Harvard Wind Ensemble will perform Vincent Persichetti’s “Divertimento” and Guy Woolfenden’s “Illyrian Dances.” The Wind Ensemble will also include works by Leroy Anderson and David Maslanka.

    Herbarium: Performance by Composer Michelle Agnes Magalhaes

    Brazilian composer Michelle Agnes Magalhaes is composing a concerto for piano and ensemble intimately anchored to a prior study of Harvard's keyboard instruments collection. The composition process includes an acoustics analysis of Harvard's pianos and fortepianos in order to elaborate the harmonic material of the piece. This concert is an excellent opportunity to hear an innovative composer’s newest work.
