    Donté K. Hayes - The Artist's Studio

    Donte Hayes

    The sculptural ceramic work of Donté K. Hayes pulls from his interest in hip-hop culture, history, and science fiction to explore themes in Afrofuturism, a projected vision of an imagined future which critiques the historical and cultural events of the African Diaspora and the distinct black experience of the Middle Passage. He combines ceramics with printmaking, installation, and performance to elevate his ceramic sculptures as a historical and creative base materials to inform memories of the past. Donté will present his work through images and/or a brief demo and host Fabio J. Fernández will guide the discussion through a range of topics including access, mentorship, and community

    Salvador Jiménez Flores

    We welcome Salvador Jiménez-Flores back to Harvard Ceramics to speak about his work and current projects. In his interdisciplinary work, Salvador explores the themes of colonization, migration, "the other," stereotypes and futurism. Salvador is currently an artist and assistant professor in Ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Prior to that, he was an Artist in Residence at the Harvard Ceramics Program from 2015-17. Salvador will present his work through images and/or a brief demo and host Fabio J. Fernández will guide the discussion through a range of topics including access, mentorship, and community.

    Sanam Emami

    Potter Sanam Emami was born in Iran and grew up in England. She now lives in Colorado, where she is an associate professor of art at Colorado State University. She came to pottery after studying American history, which led her to think about her own history, and her work combines influences of Persian and Islamic art with a contemporary sensibility. For Sanam, making pots, and understanding her voice within that work, is a continuing journey. Fabio Fernández will lead us in a conversation with Sanam from her Colorado studio as part of  The Artist’s Studio series.

    Roberto Lugo uses porcelain as his medium of choice, illuminating its aristocratic surface with imagery of poverty, inequality, and social and racial injustice. Lugo will be in conversation with Fabio J. Fernández as part of our The Artist’s Studio series regarding the trajectory of his artistic voice and practice in clay from his inspirational Emerging Artist lecture in 2015 at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference to his recent receipt of the Rome Prize as well as a Pew Fellowship in 2019.
