While the dance numbers, Bollywood-infused rock, and jewel-toned outfits of Ghungroo certainly caught the eye, it was the sets in between that stayed with me.
The show is a massive student production (200+ undergrads) to celebrate South Asian culture, headed by the South Asian Association, and featuring classical and folk dances, along with ambitious musical performances - including a fusion version of Coldplay. Skits in between sets at Agassiz Theater March 4-6th poked fun at Indian stereotypes, sometimes in the form of Hollywood parody ("Legally Brown" riffed on Legally Blonde) or song (one performer crooned "Baby are you brown, brown, brown?" to the tune of Jay Sean's hit song). These were well-received, proving that even the uh, older folk (it was Junior's Parents' Weekend) are up to speed on pop culture.
