Funding to shape a career or a life

by Simon de Carvalho '14

Everyone is familiar with the concept of the struggling artist: the creative genius who lives his or her life off of ramen noodles and two pairs of socks. But fear not! Harvard, fortunately, can help.

Soon approaching are deadlines for many kinds of fellowships, grants and competitions offered to students by the Harvard community. These provide funding for various projects, both academic and artistic, that have the potential to shape a career or even a life.

Molly Fitzpatrick ’11, a recipient of one of last year’s Artistic Development Fellowships, used her money to take a graduate-level sitcom writing class at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, an opportunity that she says will give her valuable help as she pursues her career. What will she do? She doesn’t know, she says, but she’s "sure TV will figure importantly into my career in some way," and the opportunity gave her "great insight into how television shows are constructed."

This is just one of many opportunities afforded by Harvard’s many fellowships. Below is a list (with brief descriptions) of fellowships with application deadlines in the near future. A more general (and all-encompassing) list of opportunities may be found on the Office for the Arts’ website here.

Apply away, and here's wishing you many ramen-free days in the future!
