From Manga to Musical: The Journey of "The Four Immigrants" with Min Kahng

Playwright and composer Min Kahng is one of the most exciting new voices in American musical theater. His Broadway-style show The Four Immigrants: An American Musical Manga received the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards for Original Script and Original Music, the Theatre Bay Area Award for World Premiere Musical and the Edgerton New Play Award. During a three-day residency Oct. 9-11 at Harvard, Kahng will meet with students in music and theater classes and hold two public events. His visit takes place in conjunction with the Houghton Library exhibition Treading the Borders: Immigration and the American Stage that runs September 5-December 15, 2018 at Houghton Library. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

In this lecture, Kahng will discuss the origins and development of his musical, which is based on a 1931 graphic memoir by Henry Yoshitaka Kiyama. All are welcome.
