Robert O’Hara’s semi-autobiographical subversive comedy tells the story of Sutter on his journey to adulthood growing up Black and gay in the late 20th century. The play follows Sutter from his childhood home, to his church, to dive bars and motel rooms as he learns from his adventures and misadventures about love, sex, identity, writing, family, friends, and ultimately himself. The show is a kaleidoscopic experience, sometimes featuring intrepid meta-theatrics other times intimate and poignant views into Sutter’s personal life. BOOTYCANDY urges audiences to examine not only Sutter’s life, but also to consider and challenge their own conceptions of race, sexuality, gender, and the ways these factors influence one’s personhood. In turn, the play in its totality invites its audience to look at the ways each of us can positively and negatively impact our communities and society at large.
