A 2016 Doris Duke Artist and a 2016 Creative Capital awardee, Sharon Bridgforth collaborates with actors, dancers, singers and audiences live during performance as she composes moving soundscapes of her ritual/jazz texts. In this artist talk, she will focus on the process of using theatrical jazz performance methodologies to explore Black American migrations queerly, sharing images and video from early workings of her piece love conjure/blues and her new project, dat Black Mermaid Man Lady/Home. love conjure/blues—which will be presented by Harvard’s BlackC.A.S.T. theater group during the spring term, April 13-21—explores a range of possibilities of gender expression and sexuality within a rural, Black working class context. The dat Black Mermaid Man Lady/Home project will acquire and gift a home to an emerging artist. The project will be in residence in the artist house for a month, offering art centered community engagement activities leading up to the house gifting.

Born in Paraguay, Daiana Ferreira Da Costa is a lawyer and a Cultural Ambassador for her native country, as well as an acclaimed, prize-winning classical guitarist and music teacher. She will discuss her career as a musical artist and perform selections on guitar during this lecture-demonstration.
