The A.R.T. hosts local scholars, students, and fans of medieval literature in a live reading of the epic poem Beowulf in the original Old English-over drinks, as it was meant to be heard. Over 1,000 years before the Oberon's current presentation of Beowulf-A Thousand Years of Baggage, Anglo-Saxon poets composed and performed this 4-hour epic poem for their lords and friends in mead halls. Come for as long as you want, or stay for the whole epic, or sign up to read a passage if you know Old English! Guest readers already include an array of accomplished medieval scholars, including Beowulf specialist Dan Donoghue (Harvard). Translations will be made available; and on breaks, our scholars will field questions about the poem and medieval history and culture. Details
